The focus of this tutorial is on methods of cognitive (high-level) operational situation modeling and control applied for the tasks of management of complex distributed systems, e.g. diagnostic situation analysis in telecommunication networks, battlespace situation control in military applications, and predictive situation analysis in dealing with natural, technological or terrorist-inflicted disasters. Important new factors are associated with the modeling and operational support of those systems, including high mobility of the nodes (entities, component systems, agents), large-scale distribution of them, unpredictable changes in the system topology, changes in the functional role and authority of the nodes, and increased sophistication in interaction between the nodes.
